A great image taps a sense beyond sight.
It engages the viewer, inviting them to relate and leaving them wanting to experience more.
My life as a photographer began as a burned out news writer that ended up with a degree in Photojournalism. I loved taking pictures, but soon abandoned journalism to seek more creative license and a broader freedom to shape images. Even so, I never grew far from the storytelling inherent in those documentary roots. Whether I'm capturing the moment, creating a moment or getting caught in one, storytelling is what I love most.
After some time in the Northwest, I made my way to New York, not far from where I grew up. As an editorial fashion and portrait photographer, and an assistant before then, I was educated by a lot of really smart and talented people. It was a great time for me to create beautiful and compelling images while honing my perspective and abilities.
I then moved to Chicago. I've been based here for 10 years shooting commercial, editorial and corporate assignments. I’ve also reconnected with those documentary roots. Did I mention I love taking pictures?
Knowing what is needed, what you do well, and being open to things beyond your control are solid keys to success. Curiosity is a wonderful thing, too. Everything else, whether it’s time, budget, or even light, is just math and will power.
I believe in communities. I am always seeking to find them, and learn from them and contribute. They make us strong.
Sarah, Willa, Alexandra and June make me fulfilled and happy every day. Each of them is amazing.
